While games continue to be the most widely used mobile apps, users in the 24-25 year-old demographic use them substantially less, suggesting that the apps may see their popularity wane, according to app analytics company Flurry.

“While gaming still consumes a large portion of the time spent on devices, other categories appear to be closing the gap when it comes to consumer attention,” the company said.

Millennials, the 24-35 year-old group demographic group that is highly sought after by marketers, use games less than average. They show higher than average use of sports, health and fitness, media and shopping apps.

Curiously, male millennials use games less than females in the same age range.

So why do games remain so dominant?

“It’s turns out that it’s the middle aged Gen X-ers who grew up with gaming consoles who are over-indexing on games,” Flurry said.
